AN axe wielded by film star Jack Nicholson in classic horror The Shining has gone on sale for £45,000.
His deranged character Jack Torrance brandishes the weapon and yells “Here’s Johnny” after he chases terrified wife Wendy around a deserted hotel.
The 35in prop was carved from hard foam to make it safer and lighter to carry — but Jack used a real axe for the iconic scene in which he smashes a hole in a bathroom door before poking his head through.
Warner Bros created several axes for the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film but only a few foam examples survive.
Specialist Daniel Wade said: “It’s a miracle this exists.
“In 1980, film memorabilia collecting was in its infancy. Props were props, to be thrown away after shooting.
“In any case, The Shining was panned when it came out, so there would have been few people interested in owning one.”
It is being sold together with a signed photo of Nicholson by Bristol dealer Paul Fraser Collectibles.
